Hello everyone! Today we are learning how to shade linear inequalities. We will show you how to determine the region of a linear inequality on a graph using the example x plus y is less than or equal to two.
Step one is to draw the boundary line. Treat the inequality as an equation, x plus y equals two. Find the intercepts at two zero and zero two, plot those points on the axes, and then draw the line connecting them.
Step two: Check the symbol. Use a solid line if the symbol is less than or equal to, or greater than or equal to. If the symbol is just less than or greater than, use a dashed line instead.
Step three: Test a point. Pick a point not on the line, like zero zero. Plugging it into our inequality, zero plus zero is less than or equal to two. Since zero is less than or equal to two, this statement is true.
Step four: Shade the region. Since our test result was true, we shade the side of the boundary line that contains our test point, zero zero.
In summary: graph the boundary line, use a solid line for equality, use a test point to find the direction, and then shade the valid side.
